About Us

Slingshot Creative is a UK-based charity dedicated to promoting equality and diversity within the film, television, and media industries. Founded by sisters Elizabeth and Victoria Lawal—both industry professionals with firsthand experience of the barriers faced by underrepresented creatives—our organisation exists to create meaningful change where it is most needed.

We champion Black and other underrepresented professionals by providing peer support, mentoring, advocacy, and safe spaces where diverse voices can thrive. Through quarterly meetups, mentoring schemes, workshops, and industry events, we empower individuals to overcome systemic barriers, build resilience, and share their stories.

At Slingshot Creative, we believe that true representation matters. By fostering inclusive industry practices and challenging discrimination, we strive to reshape media narratives and open doors for diverse talent across the UK.

Our community is built on lived experience, collaboration, and a shared commitment to equity. Together, we’re creating a more inclusive media landscape—one where everyone’s voice can be heard.

Who We Are

Between us, we’ve worked for several years in the screen industries across a broad range of mediums including Film, TV, Documentary, Music Videos and Commercials. We’ve worked with various organisations such as the BBC, Netflix, HBO, Apple, Discovery, Sky and more. Throughout our journey, we have acquired valuable insights crucial for connecting established industry leaders with emerging talents from underrepresented backgrounds, each with their captivating stories to tell.

Growing up I’ve always been drawn to all things creative, ranging from singing and drama to textiles. However, I distinctly remember watching the Harry Potter films as a child and being captivated by its world and the wonder of it all. I had no clue what job roles existed behind the camera or how to get there. All I knew, was that was where my heart desired to be, to be part of the magic and creative process of conjuring engaging stories.

My heart to help others has created a desire in me to support individuals in the way I felt support on my journey was lacking. Whilst I can’t change my past, I get a lot of fulfilment knowing that I can be of service to others who have the same burning desire yet limited direction I had.

With a strong affinity for the arts and the need for expression from a young age, the creative course would always be a path I travelled – be it via acting, writing, music or more, all eventually led to the professional pursuit of working in the field of TV and Film which is where I’ve worked the last several years.

Born with a deep desire to help others, this expression has always demonstrated itself irrespective of the spaces I’ve found myself in and the TV and film industry has been no different. In this space, I’ve often found myself mentoring and building others so they could flourish personally and professionally. Recognising a constant need for this and that I lacked this at key stages in my life, I’m determined to support those who also lack this benefit.

I’m passionate about speaking into individuals’ lives and equipping them with the tools to recognise who they are so they can effectively become who they’re supposed to be

What We Are
Passionate
About

Championing Black Voices
We believe Black stories and perspectives must be at the heart of film and TV. By amplifying Black creatives’ voices, we ensure authentic representation both on screen and behind the scenes.

Driving Equity and Inclusion
We are committed to dismantling systemic barriers that limit access and opportunity. Our work pushes for fairness in hiring, leadership, and creative decision-making across the industry.

Building Community and Collaboration
Through mentorship, masterclasses, and shared storytelling, we foster strong networks where Black talent can connect, learn, and grow together — supporting each other’s success.

Shaping Cultural Understanding
We engage the wider public to shift perceptions and challenge stereotypes, helping to create a film and TV landscape that values diversity, complexity, and truth.

“Our vision is to build an ecosystem for communities that crosses social and cultural boundaries.”

Our Trustees

Our Trustees provide strategic guidance and support for our programmes and our team, ensuring Slingshot Creative delivers our social mission. Our Board members are leaders in the creative industries, business and the public sector. They represent the demographic of our beneficiaries and work hard to ensure that we make effective decisions that fulfil our mission and benefit the community.

Vision

We desire to create a world where individuals have thriving careers in film & TV because of their value, not because of who they know. Our vision is to build an ecosystem for communities that crosses social and cultural boundaries, where pursuing a film career is more than a dream but rather a reality, accessible to all.

What Others Say About Us

E. Thompson

“Elizabeth has been a great support as I’ve found my feet within the TV and Film. She’s first of all very encouraging, but also resourceful. When I told her of my intention to move over , she began by signposting me to so many different sites, material, groups and even contacts. There I was able to make some connections, which led to my first role in TV. Throughout the time of our initial conversation till now she has checked in and kept me informed. She would be a great mentor to anyone in this industry because she’s shown she cares.”

R. Conway

S. Ali

“I was transitioning from architecture into Film and Elizabeth really went out of her way to help me out. Her help and advice gave me the confidence and knowledge to apply for new roles and I was able to get a Job as a draughtsperson working for BBC3. I really can’t thank Elizabeth enough for all her help. Having worked in the industry she has a great understanding of the current landscape of the industry and the struggle it is to try and break into it, hence why she is an invaluable guide to anyone new to the industry.”
